Carly’s Carton – Perforated Aluminum – 21” x 13” x 8”

.

My 2D to 3D series explores the transformation of flat, precise drawings into three-dimensional structures—open boxes that exist in a state of possibility rather than containment. By using materials like clay, perforated metal, paper, and aluminum rod, I emphasize how form, space, and perception interact in ways that echo the principles of quantum reality.

In quantum mechanics, observation is not passive—it shapes reality. The observer effect suggests that the very act of viewing can alter what is being observed. My work embraces this idea: from one angle, the forms appear structured and rigid, but shift position, and they become fluid, ambiguous, even illusory. Shadows extend them beyond their physical dimensions, and perforations allow light and air to become part of the composition. In this way, each piece exists in a state of dynamic potential, never fully defined until engaged by the viewer.
